Payment Question-AT&T next

I'm looking to buy the new iPhone 6s but the only payment options are pay in full and AT&T next. Is there no way to just pay for the upgrade price? Or can you just do AT&T Next 12 and pay ahead for the year? Trying to avoid additional monthly payments.
